Cholera in Western Uganda

During the past two months, cholera has continued in Hoima, Kagadi, and Kyegegwa, including the refugee settlements. The number of infected people in Hoima has increased to 2,000 of whom 40 have died. In Kyegegwa, approximately 300 infected people and 22 deaths have been reported. In Kagadi, more than 20 cases had been reported by early April, and more cases are expected.

Advice

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
