Cholera in Yemen May Be Decreasing - Update

Although the total number of people infected with cholera is approaching 1,100,000 with 2,267 deaths, the number of new cases reported per week appears to be decreasing somewhat. The 5 most affected governates include Amran, Al Mahwit, Al Dhale’e, Sana’a and Dhamar. However, 174 districts are still reporting suspected cholera cases in the last 3 weeks. Children under 5 years old represent 28.8 percent of total suspected cases.

Advice

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
