Cholera in Zimbabwe

Health authorities have noted that 9 out of 62 districts have reported cases of cholera since the beginning of 2011. These are Bikita, Buhera, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chiredzi, Kadoma, Murewa, Mutare and Mutasa. To date a total of 431 cases have been registered. Of these, 373 are suspected cases and 58 are confirmed by laboratory testing. Most of the cases have occurred in rural areas. There have been 16 deaths reported. There are concerns that another major outbreak similar to the one in 2009 may occur.

Travellers to this country should be aware of the risk of exposure to cholera and take all necessary precautions to avoid consuming unsafe food and water.
