Cholera outbreak continues on Unguja Island (Zanzibar), Tanzania

The cholera outbreak that began last September on Ugunja Island (Zanzibar) and Pemba has resulted in 16 deaths and over 1,300 infected people. Contaminated wells have been identified as the source of this outbreak that is still continuing.

Advice For Travellers

This outbreak has not been controlled, and travellers visiting the affected areas may be at high risk. Travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
