Cholera outbreak in Iraq continues to increase

The cholera outbreak that was first reported in the Baghdad area continues to increase and spread with a total of 1,263 cases. The affected areas include Babylon, Baghdad, Qadisiyyah, Muthanna, Basra, Wassit, Karbala, Najaf, Thi-qar, Maysan, Diyala, Duhok, Erbil, Kirkuk, Salah al-din and Suleimaniyah.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once. Severe dehydration may occur very quickly.
