Cholera Outbreak in Nigeria - Update

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), around 9,866 cases of cholera have been reported since January of this year and 141 have resulted in death. The outbreak is widespread affecting 92 local governments and 21 states.

Recent clusters of cases have been detected in Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Zamfara, and Adamawa. The Word Health Organization and NCDC warns the public about the possibility of more cases during the rainy season.

Advice

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
