Cholera outbreaks in multiple African countries

Cholera outbreaks and deaths are being reported from the following countries (locations):

  • Malawi - Nsanje area (6 cases)
  • Ghana - Cape Coast (3 cases so far; 2,182 cases and 20 deaths in 2014)
  • Nigeria - Ogbia, Bayelsa State (6 deaths)
  • Kenya - Home Bay County and Migori County (80 cases and 7 deaths)
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo - Ankoro, Katanga Province (3 cases and 1 death)

All travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
