Civil unrest in Syria

Civil demonstrations continue in many places in Syria. About 300 people demonstrated in the southern Syrian city of Suweida where security police used force to disperse and beat them. More protests were called for today, Sunday, April 16th, to commemorate Syria's Independence Day. In spite of promises for reform, approximately 2,000 people in the suburb of Douma demanded the release of relatives arrested on Friday.

More protests continued in the city of Daraa where the initial movement for reform began.

Travellers should be aware that the situation in Syria remains volatile and many countries are advising their citizens to avoid travelling to Syria.
