Civil war in Syria has claimed over 40,000 lives

The 20-month-old revolt against the government of President Bashar al-Assad has left more than 40,000 people dead. Violent armed clashes continue across the country. Government air strikes and suicide bombs have occurred in and around Damascus. The northern borders continue to be the site for on-going warfare. Resistance forces attacked the Damascus airport resulting in the suspension of international flights. Meanwhile, the plight of civilian refugees remains critical in term of basic needs.
