Clashes Between Army and Ex-Security Personnel in Khartoum, Sudan

There have been clashes in Khartoum between the army and ex-security forces once loyal to the ousted president, Omar al-Bashir. Ex-security personnel began a protest over financial compensation issues. Clashes broke out at the Directorate of General Intelligence Service office. The protesters seized a security building near the airport, and airspace was closed for five hours. Some media reports indicate the military now has the situation under control.

Advice

The UK Government posted this notice from the Government of Sudan: “If you’re in Khartoum you should exercise caution, follow the advice of local authorities, stay away from military and security compounds and observe any roadblocks or curfews that may be imposed at short notice. If you’re due to fly in to or out of Khartoum, contact your airline for the latest scheduling information.”
