Clashes in Rio and São Paulo, Brazil

Fights briefly broke out in Rio on Saturday when demonstrators marked the 50th anniversary of the military coup. A protest of about 2,000 people occurred in São Paulo about the World Cup. Protests this year have been smaller, but sometimes violent, and some protesters warn that they will agitate during the June-July World Cup.

Travellers should be aware of the political tensions and potential for violence and know to avoid areas of public gatherings or demonstrations as these situations can be unpredictable.
