Colombia struggles with chikungunya fever

With at least 410,000 cases and 40 deaths since the chikungunya virus was introduced last year into the country, Colombia struggles to contain the virus. Six of the deaths were simultaneously infected with dengue fever. Reports of infections are widespread with cases occurring in nearly every department.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where both the dengue fever and chikungunya fever viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
