Colombia struggles with dengue fever

There is significant transmission of the dengue virus in Colombia. So far, there have been 52,500 reported cases, 634 of whom have had dengue haemorrhagic fever. There have been slightly more than 160 deaths. Affected departments include
Valle de Cauca, Santander, Tolima, Meta, Antioquia, Quindio, Huila, Cundinamarca, Norte de Santander and Casanare.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
