Colombia struggles with widespread dengue fever

Dengue fever cases, and deaths, are widespread in Colombia. Nationally, there have been more than 53,000 cases with 177 deaths from 11 departments. There have been almost 670 cases of the serious form of this infection called dengue haemorrhagic fever. The affected departments include Valle del Cauca, Santander, Tolima, Meta, Antioquia, Quindio, Huila, Cundinamarca, Norte de Santander, Cesar, and Casanare.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
