Conflict in Kumanovo and ongoing civil unrest in Macedonia

Armed clashes between police and an unknown group in an Albanian district of Macedonia, the town of Kumanovo, left five police officers dead and 30 injured. The conflict lasted over 15 hours.

The Skopje marathon was cancelled this morning due to broad security concerns.

Since February 2015, there has been civil unrest and a political crisis between the government and the opposition. Groups have announced they will stage daily protests at 18:00 in front of the Government or Parliament buildings in Scopje.

Advice

Travellers generally have no trouble in Macedonia, but should avoid the area of conflict, and avoid the area of any ongoing protests.
