Confrontation in Xinjiang Province, China, leaves 16 dead

Two police officers and 14 gang members were killed in a confrontation with the police who were attempting to arrest some criminal suspects. The event occurred in the city of Kashgar.

Six weeks ago, there was a terrorist attack in Tiananmen Square, where 3 Xinjiang Uighurs set fire to their vehicle after driving into crowds of tourists, killing 2 people and injuring 40. While travellers have not been targeted in Xinjiang, anyone planning to travel there should be aware that this area has been the site of sporadic unrest by Uighurs who claim cultural oppression and intrusive security measures by China. Sudden violence may occur without warning.
