Contaminated water in Patiala, Punjab, India, causes major outbreak

An outbreak of diarrhoea has affected at least 300 people and caused 7 deaths, including two children, in Patiala. All eight water samples collected from the diarrhoea-affected areas in Samana subdivision were found to be contaminated with fecal material.

Advice

Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to the many germs that cause intestinal illness (such as cholera, E.coli, salmonella, and many viruses) by avoiding consumption of contaminated food and water (especially when sold by street vendors) and by practising careful personal hygiene with frequent hand washing.
