Current typhoid epidemic in Harare occurs in same conditions that create cholera epidemics

The current large outbreak of typhoid fever in Harare is the result of the same environmental contamination (water, food, sanitation) that generates cholera epidemics. Hotels, restaurants and open air food spots may be closed for failing to follow health and hygienic standards, thus adding to the fear of a cholera outbreak.

At this time, travellers in this area should pay special attention to reducing their risk of exposure to typhoid, cholera and other water and food borne infections by taking all necessary precautions to avoid consuming contaminated food and water.
