Dangerous chemical used as diet pills exported from China

Sixty people worldwide, including 6 in the United Kingdom, have died after taking toxic DNP diet pills produced by the Beijing Herbal Health Biotech Limited Liability Company, Zhengzhou Panpan Company and many other firms. This drug is illegal in the UK and elsewhere.

Advice For Travellers

DNP (chemical name: 2,4-Dinitrophenol) can cause the body to overheat leading to hyperthermia (high temperatures) and an increased metabolic rate. This chemical is also used as an explosive and an agricultural pesticide. It was first discovered as a potential weight loss medication in 1933, but it was banned in 1938 due to severe side effects including heart attacks and death.

Travellers should be aware of the potentially fatal side effects from this “diet” pill.
