Deadly alcohol poisoning in Pakistan

At least 11 young people died in the city of Jhelum after consuming alcohol that was probably contaminated with methanol. An investigation into the source of the clandestine alcohol is underway.

The consumption of clandestine alcohol is a high risk due to it frequent contamination with methanol during distillation. Methanol is highly toxic. In the human body, consumed methanol is changed to formaldehyde and then to formic acid or formate salts. These substances are poisonous to the central nervous system and may result in blindness, coma, and death.

Travellers should only consume alcoholic beverages produced by known commercial companies.
