Deadly cholera epidemic in Benue State, Nigeria

The recent outbreak of cholera in Benue State is getting worse. In the past week, more than 30 deaths were reported (20 deaths the previous week). The lack of potable water is thought to be responsible. Travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
