Deadly cholera outbreak in Kano City, Nigeria

An outbreak of cholera that started in November 2013 has resulted in 71 deaths and 2,165 cases. Most of the cases have come from around Kano City in northern Kano state, but northern Zamfara state has also recorded hundreds of cholera cases.

Travellers to any area where cholera has been reported can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
