Deadly food borne intoxication (food poisoning) in Krabi Province, Thailand

One person has died and 43 others from the same village were hospitalised in Koh Lanta in Krabi Province due to the possible consumption of a sick hawksbill sea turtle. Further investigation is underway to confirm the suspected cause. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to the many germs that cause intestinal illness (such as food poisoning, salmonellosis, traveller's diarrhoae, etc.) by avoiding consumption of contaminated food and water (especially when sold by street vendors) and by practicing careful personal hygiene with frequent hand washing.
