Deadly gunfights in Tajikistan

Seventeen people were killed, including eight police officers and nine gunmen in attacks in and around Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe. The gunmen launched attacks on Vahdat’s internal affairs department, on the central government building in Dushanbe, and later clashed with security forces near the Dushanbe International Airport.

Advice

This kind of violence is not common in Tajikistan. However, the U.S. Embassy closed today and warned that the clashes “may be precursors to other acts of violence.”

With respect to personal safety, travellers should be alert to surroundings and may consider avoiding government, police or military buildings or installations at this time.
