Deadly measles outbreaks in Yemen and Ukraine show importance of vaccination before travelling

An outbreak of measles in western Ukraine is spreading with 1,112 cases of measles reprted so far. Of this total, 82 cases were registered for the latest 24 hours.

Meanwhile, since September, measles has resulted in the deaths of over 32 children in Lawder, in the southern Yemeni governorate of Abyan.

These two outbreaks are reported here to remind travellers that outbreaks of the highly contagious measles virus can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
