Deadly sectarian violence in Rawalpindi, Pakistan

As a Shia religious procession passed a Sunni seminary, insults were exchanged between the groups. The incident quickly degenerated into rock throwing and then gun fire. At least 8 people were killed and 44 wounded in the ensuing violence. A curfew was imposed to stop the confrontations, and all entry points into Rawalpindi were blocked, resulting in traffic chaos on the highways leading to Islamabad.

Travellers should be cautious until tensions subside. Avoid all public, political and religious demonstrations since they may become violent without warning.
