Deadly violence in Turkey today

Today in Istanbul, 2 people opened fire outside the US Consulate-General. The U.S. Consulate is closed until further notice. Also in a series of attacks around the country, six members of the Turkish security forces were killed today.

Travellers should be aware that last month, Turkey began conducting operations against the Islamic State and the Kurdish PKK militants and have been expecting retaliatory attacks.

While the risk of being caught in a terrorist attack is very low, travellers may consider avoiding public transportation at this time. With respect to personal safety, be alert and aware of your surroundings. Avoid areas such as places where there are large crowds of people, government buildings or police stations.
