Death due to Legionnaires Disease in Quebec City, Canada

There are reports of 14 cases and 1 death due to Legionnaires Disease in Quebec City. The cases are concentrated in one specific sector of downtown Quebec, the Saint-Roch. An investigation is underway, but no specific cause has been identified to date.

Transmission of legionellosis (Legionaires Disease) usually occurs following exposure to warm aerosolized water as the bacteria are inhaled through water droplets in water sprays or mists. Exposure can occur in or around hot tubs, showers, or from air conditioning systems in buildings with poorly maintained cooling towers.
