Death due to plague in New Mexico, USA

A person has died due to pneumonic (lung) plague. The person was a resident of Santa Fe County. An investigation into the source of the infection is underway.

Advice For Travellers

While the risk of exposure to plague by the general traveller is extremely low, travellers in southwest USA who engage in activities such as camping and hiking may come in contact with various kinds of rodents and their fleas that may carry the plague bacteria, especially during the warmer months.
