Deaths due to dengue fever reach 78 in Thailand

A total of 81,763 dengue fever cases and 78 deaths have been reported in Thailand this year. Most of the cases have been recorded in the northern province of Chiang Mai. In the past week, this province recorded 6,284 people infected by the virus. At least 16 provinces including Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phichit and Kalasin have reported high numbers of patients as the nationwide epidemic is becoming difficult to contain.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting cases may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
