Deaths due to dengue increase in state of São Paulo, Brazil

In the last 3 days, 13 more people have died from dengue fever statewide. In the municipality of Sorocaba, there have been 48,000 reported cases and as many as 36 deaths. In the municipality of Limeira, where almost 27,000 cases have been reported, there were 16 deaths. Deaths have also been recorded in Santos, Vale do Paraíba, Americana and Jacareí.

Many of the municipalities of the state of São Paulo have reported epidemic levels of dengue. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
