Deaths due to malaria in Botswana

Sporadic outbreaks have resulted in 11 deaths among the 1,646 malaria cases in Okavango District reported during the 2016/17 malaria transmission season. Nationwide, there have been almost 2,800 reported cases.

Advice

All travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Malaria risk exists from November to May/June in the northern parts of the country, specifically in Bobirwa, Boteti, Chobe, Ngamiland, Okavango, and Tutume districts/sub-districts where anti-malaria medication is recommended.
