Deaths due to meningitis in Niger

Of the 736 reported cases of meningitis, 61 have died in spite of mass vaccinations to prevent a possible epidemic. Thirty-five percent of the total cases are children between the ages of 5 and 14 years.

Advice For Travellers

The risk of exposure for travellers will vary from place to place within this country. In general, travellers to African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, e.g.,The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Togo, and Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June) can reduce the risk of exposure to meningitis by obtaining a vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling in these countries.
