Demonstrations across Indonesia

People are rallying across Indonesia today protesting a hike in fuel prices. In Jakarta, about 3000 people rallied outside the national parliament building, and police fired tear gas to stop the surge of people toward the parliament. On Sulawesi Island, about 500 people staged a protest. In Jambi, hundreds of people also attempted to enter the gates of the local legislature.

Travellers should be aware of the tensions in Indonesia this week and avoid public gatherings and demonstrations that could become violent without warning.
