Advice For Travellers

Without laboratory tests, it is difficult to distinguish infection by dengue virus from chikungunya virus since the symptoms they cause can be very similar. The risk of exposure to one or both of these viruses can be very high wherever mosquitoes are actively transmitting them. All travellers to areas where both these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
