Dengue and chikungunya both in Pernambuco, Brazil

Dengue fever is a much bigger problem than chikungunya fever in Pernambuco. So far this year, there have been 32,580 casos of dengue with 15 deaths compared to 6 cases of chikungunya. Most of the dengue fever cases have been reported by the municipalities of Recife, Camaragibe, Jaboatão dos Guararapes and Caruaru. Chikungunya has been reported by Iati, Itaíba and Recife.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where both the dengue fever and chikungunya fever viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
