Dengue and chikungunya occurring simultaneously in Paraguay

So far this year, there have been at least 1,000 cases of dengue and, at the same time, an increase in cases of chikungunya fever to 559 cases. The most affected municipalities include Villa Elisa and Fernando de la Mora. In addition, affected districts include Luque, Asuncion, Nemby, Capiatá and San Lorenzo.

Both these viral infections are transmitted by mosquito bites. Travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
