Dengue, chikungunya and Zika transmitted in Santa Cruz, Bolivia

There are reports of people infected with one or more of three viruses, dengue, chikungunya and Zika, in the city of Santa Cruz. Of the more than 25,500 people suspected of being infected, slightly more than 1,600 have actually had positive laboratory tests. About half of the infected people are suspected of being infected with the chikungunya virus.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue, chikungunya and/or Zika infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
