Dengue epidemic in Taiwan may be declining

For the first time in many months, the the number of new dengue fever cases reported each day fell below 100, bringing the total number of cases since May of this year to 41,811 infected people. The epidemic remains focused primarily in the cities of Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung County. However, deaths continue to be reported. In the latest report, 9 new deaths brought the total to 204 deceased due to dengue.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
