Dengue epidemic still increasing in Taiwan

Taiwan's total number of dengue fever cases has exceeded 14,500 cases. In one day, 719 new cases were registered, and 600 of these were in Tainan which continues to be the centre for this epidemic. In Tainan, over 12,000 cases have been recorded, but Kaohsiung is also significantly affected. The illness has spread as far north as Taipei, but with far fewer cases in this area.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
