Dengue fever activity in Caribbean islands (summary)

Towards the end of 2012, reports of dengue fever infection in the Caribbean area decreased overall with most of the reported cases occurring in Belize. Five countries (Belize, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba) reported an increase in dengue fever cases. Barbados had a steady rate of reported cases during 2012. Many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
