Dengue fever and Chikungunya in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The municipality of Santa Cruz is reporting people who are infected with the chikungunya or dengue virus. A total of 839 people have been diagnosed with dengue, and the number of new cases each week has risen from 10 to over 100 patients. In addition, approximately 550 cases of chikungunya fever have been registered.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where both the dengue fever and chikungunya fever viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
