Dengue fever and chikungunya in Mato Grosso, Brazil

Through the first week in June, there have been almost 14,000 cases of dengue fever with 9 deaths. This number is 68% greater than the number of cases reported in the same time period last year. Of the 141 municipalities in the state, 51 have reached epidemic levels. The affected municipalities include Santa Carmem, Ribeirãozinho, Cocalinho, Paranaíta, Santa Rita do Trivelato, Torixoréu, Campo Novo do Parecis, Alto Taquari, Matupá, and Novo Horizonte do Norte.

In addition, there have been 102 suspected cases of chikungunya.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to areas where both the dengue fever and chikungunya fever viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
