Dengue fever cases and outbreaks in Mexico and Central America (update)

Mexico

• Sinaloa - there are increasing numbers of dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever cases in Mazatlan and Escuinapa.
• Tamaulipas - there are increasing numbers of dengue fever cases reported in the state. Costa Rica - a total of 5,615 cases of dengue fever and 11 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever have been reported. Of these over 1,200 have occurred in Pacific Coast regions of the country.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
