Dengue fever cases are increasing in Pune City, Maharashtra, India

Since January 2012, there have been 959 reported cases of dengue fever. In one day this week, 14 new cases were diagnosed. Although cooler winter temperatures are expected to reduce the number of mosquitoes, night time temperatures have not been particularly cool so far, and transmission of the virus is continuing. Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
