Dengue fever cases continue to increase in Ecuador

So far in 2013, there have been 2,313 reported cases of dengue fever throughout the country. There have been 170 cases of the more severe, life-threatening form of the disease along with 5 deaths. The most affected provinces include Manabí, Sucumbíos, Guayas, and Los Ríos. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
