Dengue fever cases, deaths and outbreaks in various countries in Asia and Africa (summary)

Cases*, deaths and outbreaks due to dengue fever have been reported in the following countries:

Thailand: National - 7,033 cases; 5 deaths; most affected provinces include Songkhla, Krabi, Phatthalung, Surat Thani and Rayong

Philippines: Antique Province - 33 cases; 1 death

Singapore: National - 232 cases in 2 urban areas

Australia:

  • Cairns, Queensland - 64 cases in 2 outbreaks

Kenya: North Eastern Province - at least 300 cases; 3 suspected dengue deaths

*Note: There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
