Dengue fever cases reported from 70 percent of Ecuadorian Provinces

So far this year, there have been 1,280 reported cases of dengue fever, more than were reported for the same time period last year. The most affected provinces include Sucumbíos, Guayas, Manabí, Los Ríos, El Oro, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas and Orellana. Control efforts are underway in 24 of Ecuador's provinces. There may be many more cases. Counting and reporting cases of dengue may be hampered by lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
