Dengue fever cases reported from several Andean countries in South America

Dengue fever cases and outbreaks continue to be reported from the following countries:
Ecuador - 5,849 cases; 30 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Most affected provinces include Manabi, Guayas, Los Rios, El Oro, Orellana, and Sucumbios.
Peru -

  • in the Madre de Dios region, 772 cases. The most affected districts include Tambopata, Inambari, and Las Piedras.
  • in the Piura region, 200 cases in the Colon district.
    Venezuela - 15,105 cases, Increasing trend.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
