Dengue fever cases surge in Mina Gerais, Brazil

With more than 6,500 cases of dengue reported so far in January across the state of Minas Gerais, there are more cases than the same time period last year. The most afffected cities include Ipatinga, Timóteo and Coronel Fabriciano. Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
